Do you remember when you were young and could eat whatever tickled your fancy with absolutely no consequences? You’d share pizzas with friends after school and never even give a thought to hitting the gym? Well, sadly, as we age, our metabolisms starts to decline, meaning that it can become much more difficult to shift those few extra pounds and feel our best.

In fact, once you hit 40, your metabolism decelerates by about five percent every decade. Oestrogen levels in the body cause insulin levels to increase and thyroid levels to decrease. This results in more intense feelings of hunger. And when you’re hungrier, whether or not your body actually needs more fuel, you are likely to consume more calories. We also tend to lose muscle mass as we age, which also makes it more difficult to lose weight.

Though it all sounds pretty terrifying, there are tons of preventative measures to keep your metabolism chugging along like no time has passed. Here are the best ways to easily and effectively increase your metabolism.

#1. Know the importance of water. If you didn’t already know how important it is to get the recommended amount of water every day, we’ve got another reason to add to the pile.
