At Rocycle we’re all about Mind Body Music, but, just as important is the fact that we’re a family. So, to make sure each class is not just a party but a reunion, we’d like to introduce our instructors so you know a little bit more about them than their signature moves on the bike. You’ve probably spotted our new instructor, Joey on the schedule and in the studio, so we’re sure you’re wondering what he’s all about. Read on to find out how he approaches spinning with the mind of a yogi sparkling water is his staff of life.
Hi Joey! Thanks so much for sitting down with us today. Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Joey, but that’s actually just my nickname. My full name is Jose Luis Anchondo. I know – very Spanish haha. I have Mexican heritage, and I was born in El Paso, Texas, a small city on the border between Mexico and the States. I always dreamt of moving to NYC, and when I was 18, I made it happen. I packed three bags, flew to NYC to start my adventure and never looked back! I knew New York was where I belonged, and I loved every second of it!
Wait, you belonged in New York? Then what about Amsterdam? And Rocycle?!
I never really knew much about Amsterdam at all; in fact when I first heard ‘Amsterdam’ my question was, “Where is that?” Foolish of me because I now realize what an amazing place it is. I fell in love with a Dutchie, and, after the last election in the U.S, I decided I wanted to call Amsterdam home! Here I am 5 months later, and this incredible adventure just reminds me every day that I made the right choice. In the States, I was obsessed with this style of spinning, and when I was getting ready to move, my heart broke a bit knowing that I might not be able to continue it here. To my surprise, one Google search later and in the door at Rocycle I was! Boy was I happy to be here; I felt I had a little piece of home.
It certainly does feel that way. We are a family, after all. Is there a spiritual component to exercise?
There is absolutely for my practice. I like to have a sort of yoga approach to my workouts. I never like to do something just to do it. I need to have a reason, a goal and a route! I make sure to clear my mind and live in the presence – I think it is the key to making a REAL change!
That’s a great, holistic approach. So how do you give energy to your class? What sets it apart?
I always tell my class to breathe in and, on the exhale, let the stress and negativity go! I think the key to an amazing class is when everyone is in the room with their full mind and heart. The energy is already in the room; all you need to do is pick it up and ride with it! Show up, be present and the rest will come. I think my way of teaching is very different, and I often get feedback that my classes are just that. I think that’s amazing! I love piling my classes with lots of moves. My motto is ‘don’t think, just move.’ I love a short transition and don’t want to give you too much time to think about what you have to do after class! I want you with me for 45 minutes, riding with your heart and NOTHING ELSE!
Nothing else?! Not even a healthy snack after?! Speaking of, what are your healthy essentials?
100% peanut butter, rice cakes, eggs, almond milk, oats, crackers, cheese, grapefruit and, of course, sparkling water! I live on sparkling water!
Ok, last question. What does Rocycle mean to you?
Rocycle means accepting yourself for what and who you are, no matter what, then making that better! It means loving yourself in the form that you are in and then doing something to make you rise! It means letting go of the boundaries you set for yourself and then rising higher than you thought you could have! It means family, joy, energy, power, perseverance and love!
