Getting to Ro'Malou

Words byHayley Hayley

At Rocycle we’re all about Mind Body Music, but, just as important is the fact that we’re a family. So, to make sure each class is not just a party but a reunion, we’d like to introduce some of our Ro’Regulars. Because Utrecht is just as dear to our hearts as Amsterdam, we figured it was time to show our sister city a little love; that’s why we sat down with Ro’ fanatic and climb devotee, Malou de Rooy. Keep reading to find out her favourite healthy hotspots in Utrecht, what kind of music motivates her most and what Rocycle means to her.

Hi Malou! We’re thrilled to get to Ro’ you a bit better and share your story. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Malou, a 27-year-old Dutchie living in Utrecht for 10 years. I moved here for my studies; back then I spent a lot of time partying with friends and enjoying late night snacks. Fast forward: I now live together with my boyfriend in my favourite neighbourhood, Lombok, I wake up at times that I used to go to bed, I love cooking and eating good food and exercising is one of my favourite things to do.

Oh how things can change in a few years! So what brought you to Rocycle?

After my studies, I felt it was time for a healthier lifestyle, so I started going to a gym. Over the past few years, I’ve been doing weight training, cardio, kickboxing, bootcamps and more. Last year, a colleague told me about Rocycle in Amsterdam, and I grew curious. Then suddenly I heard that Rocycle was opening a studio Utrecht, and I immediately bought the opening-ride package. And what has happened since then? I am close to hitting my 75 ride milestone, so I guess that tells the story 😉

No way! Congratulations! How do your friends and family fit into your Rocycle story?

I try to bring as many people with me as possible! Many friends have already become Ro’riders, and I will continue to share my passion with everyone I know. Still need to convince my boyfriend though.

Hahah that could be a tricky one! Is nutrition something you consider an important facet of a healthy lifestyle? How do you fuel yourself on a ride day?

Definitely! Abs are made in the kitchen, right? If you eat crap, you can exercise as much as you want, but you still won’t feel super healthy. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy hamburgers, chocolate, alcohol or other treats, but I always balance it with lots of veggies, proteins and slow carbs. Before an early morning ride, I often eat a piece of fruit, and before an evening ride, I eat yoghurt with muesli or a savoury snack. And I always save dinner for after class, because I don’t enjoy cycling with a full stomach.

We couldn’t agree more. It’s the combination that makes a healthy lifestyle. Who is your favourite instructor and why?

This is a very hard question because I really like many Utrecht instructors. But if I really had to choose, I’d say Guilio!

And what about your favourite move on the bike?

The climbs.

OH man, we love-hate those haha. So tough! What do you like to wear to the studio?

Black legging, a sports bra and a pink top.

We love your approach to healthy eating. What can we always find in your fridge?

Yoghurt, eggs, veggies, sundried tomatoes, green pesto, beer and wine.

Mmmmm we want to come over for dinner. Do you think music is an important motivator for exercise? What would you play if you were an instructor?

I believe music is a key driver for a great workout! I’d play a combination of tech house and golden oldies – these are also the classes that I like the most.

We like the sound of that. Which healthy hotspot is your favourite haunt in Utrecht?

There are sooo many healthy hotpots in Utrecht, and I always try out as many as possible, but my favourite is the Vietnamese restaurant An An for dinner – or Loaded for all day guilty pleasures.

Damn we have to come to Utrecht more. Can you tell us something that not everyone knows about you?

That my family is everything to me; I would literally walk through fire for them.

Alright, last one. What does Rocycle mean to you?

This sounds cheesy, but Rocycle has really brought so much extra joy to my life. The energy I get from every class is amazing, my health is improving every day and I love the contagious passion from the instructors.
