Mornings look different for everyone. While no two AMs may look alike, we can all agree that starting off on the right foot really sets the tone for the day. Always looking for inspiration for how to be our happiest, healthiest selves, we decided to have a chat with our Marketing Manager, Marte van Goudzwaard, to find out how she kicks off each day, what inspires her and how to carry that positive attitude through until she tucks in for bed.
It’s a typical weekday. What time are you waking up?
My alarm goes off at 07.30, but I love to wake up slowly. I’ll stay in bed until 8 and then get up. Sometimes I like to work out before work and take an 8.15 Rocycle class, so then I’d wake up a bit earlier. When I’m in a really good, mood I’ll take the 7:00 class, but I have to be honest: this doesn’t happen that often anymore ;).
We’ve found ourselves transitioning to those 8:15 classes too. We can’t blame you! Are you hitting the snooze button? Or are you bounding out of bed before your alarm?
I’m probably the biggest snoozer there is haha. I just can’t get out of bed immediately after my alarm goes off; I snooze for almost half an hour… I’ve tried many times to set my alarm later so that I’d have to wake up straight away, and let’s just say it did not end well. I’d end up snoozing anyway and have no time for my morning routine. So, I’m back to an earlier alarm and snoozing again :).
To each their own – whatever gets you out of bed in the morning. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? A little meditation? Scroll through Instagram?
Although I'm not a big fan of this habit, the first thing I do is grab my phone and scroll through Instagram. I check some messages, but most of the time I don’t reply until breakfast when I’m a little more awake.
It’s one of those bad yet irresistible habits; we’re with you. Breakfast: most important meal of the day or totally overrated?
I love breakfast! I wanted to say my favourite meal of the day, but I couldn’t ignore lunch or dinner ;). Waking up with a coffee, a healthy breakfast and some music is my favourite moment of the day!
Coffee or tea?
Definitely coffee. I’ll never skip a coffee in the morning.
And how do you prepare for the day ahead?
I always check my agenda and emails during breakfast so that I can make a to-do list and know what to expect for the day. But I also like to take the day as it comes. For example, I almost never plan a workout or evening plans in advance; instead, I’ll decide what my evening is going to look like during the day.
Leaves a little room for spontaneity. Love it. What gets you excited to get out of bed in the morning?
I’m a morning person, so I almost never have trouble getting out of bed or am in a bad mood when waking up. Most of the time I’m in a good mood, ready to make it an amazing day. I always try to look forward to at least one moment in the day. This can even be something small like treating myself to a nice lunch, grabbing a coffee with a friend/colleague or having a chill night at home. You can make something positive out of everything.
It’s all about how you look at things. Tell us about your craziest dream.
Haha had to think about this for a while. But I used to have a recurring dream when I was younger where I’d oversleep for school. I’d quickly jump on the bike only to realise I hadn’t put on any clothes whatsoever… So, I’d go back home, jump on the bike again, realise I’d only put on my pants and on and on until it was dark, and I’d never reach school. Luckily this dream hasn’t come back for a while haha.
Nightmare!! What’s the last thing you do before you leave the house in the morning?
I always drink some water and eat a small bite, like a date, before I leave the house because I eat my breakfast at the office. I can be a bit chaotic, so I’ll probably walk back into the house because I forgot something.
Ok, last one. What is your morning mantra?
Start the day with a positive mindset and all good will come your way.
